| Once there was a Hindu King who adored his baby son and had a very special governess to watch over the child. One day, she had to go away on a very long journey. Since the King wouldn't trust anyone else to watch over his baby, he called his artisans to carve a likeness of the governess to hang over the baby's cradle to guard it from bad dreams and evil spirits. |
| Today, Balinese artisans still create cradle guardians in the form of fanciful creatures like mermaids and dragons in addition to the traditional flying ladies like the ones originally carved for the Hindu King. |
